A very long time ago, Victor Trevor was sent by Mycroft Holmes to look after his little brother.
Sherlock's years in university, his travels afterwards, his struggles with his brother and his relationship with drugs are not things Sherlock speaks of much, so John is intrigued when Sherlock begins to reveal things about his past. Things like Victor Trevor.
John Watson can tell there's more to this story than what Sherlock chooses to tell. Slowly, in a story that spans 1985-2011, the pieces are fitted together.
Based on The Adventure of the Gloria Scott and the events of the preceding years.

Sherlock Holmes is the youngest of two princes, and after his elder brother Mycroft gave up the throne in order to marry Greg Lestrade, the responsibility has fallen to him to find a suitable husband before he's crowned King. But Sherlock is nineteen years old, and the last thing he wants is a well-to-do, irritating spouse picked by his father.
Cue John Watson, fresh from the war and left with nowhere to live. He doesn't realise he needs help until Sherlock steps in and offers it to him, and by the time he gets used to the luxuries of hiding out in England's largest palace, Sherlock has decided who he wants for his husband.
