Avvicinò le dita alla giacca di Moriarty, sforzandosi di non entrare in contatto col suo corpo e farsi scoprire. Sfiorò la tasca del gilet scuro risalendo con più attenzione possibile, quando l’altro si mosse pesando sul gancio che lo trafiggeva.
Holmes sussultò dal dolore, e la sua mano automaticamente si aggrappò al fianco di Moriarty in uno spasmo incontrollabile. Questi si girò a fissarlo, con una punta si divertimento sul volto – Lei mi stupisce, Holmes…era davvero convinto di farcela così facilmente? –. Fece un cenno ai suoi uomini che, senza una parola, uscirono. La porta sbatte dietro di loro.
– Vede, è necessario che lei capisca di essere stato sconfitto… - disse mellifluo - …e che lo capisca definitivamente -. Dietro di loro il giradischi scattò ricominciando ad eseguire il "Die forelle". L’introduzione risuonò con marziale vivacità.
Il suo ghigno sadico fece irrigidire il detective: qualunque tortura avesse in mente per lui non poteva che essere ancora peggiore di quella appena infertagli.

For shkinkmeme. The prompt was that during the hiatus, Watson dies, leaving Mary alone with their child to raise. Holmes comes back and to protect his friend's wife, offers to marry her. Can they make a marriage of convenience work?
It's a little choppy, but I was hoping to get the story in the style of Doyle's which is a lot of "and then Holmes leaves and does stuff and I have no idea what is going on la-di-da!"

Le prime mosse scorsero rapide e precise, mentre all’interno del salone Watson cercava febbrilmente il fratello di Sim. La mente di Holmes pareva seguirlo: metà sugli scacchi, metà in sala.
- Abbiamo entrambi la coppia degli alfieri. Posso essere assente dal salone, ma i miei metodi non lo sono –. Prima regola: intimidire.
- Non parlerà certo del dottor Watson – rispose Moriarty fingendosi ironicamente sorpreso, quasi risentito - Non mi sembra equo –.
Lui lo ignorò muovendo di nuovo; la risposta fu rapida, quasi istantanea. Il suo rivale pareva avere pronta la mossa ancora prima che lui elaborasse la propria.

...With the steps of the man he was chasing growing further and further ahead, Holmes focused his ears in a different direction. Some article made of wood being broken. The sharp clack of Watson’s walking stick against something that then went sliding across the cobblestones…a knife perhaps.
Holmes was listening so intently that the gunfire that came next was shockingly loud, as if he was standing right next to it. First one shot, then two answering.
