Olivia and Elliot worked as partners for years, fell in love, got married and had a kid. Kathy doesn't exist well not in this world so none of his kids do either. Now, Olivia is still on maternity leave and Elliot has to return back to work. Leila Dawson, an intern working under Huang is kind of stepping in for his partner until they find him a new one, Liv is coming back but not to the SVU and Leila is the best they have with how under funded they are.
The first day he returns a film is dropped on his desk, with a note saying that it's a real snuff film. The film was bought in a back alley porn deal and the guy who bought it was concerned enough about how it looked to want it investigated but doesn't want the cops to know he bought it so he just had it dropped there.
Despite Leila's assurances that there is no such thing as an actual snuff film, Elliot is convinced that this is one and he needs to find the girl in it, at very least to verify that it was just a very good fake though he has no hopes of it and it's clear, after viewing it, Leila thinks it's real as well but she can't stop denying her position on it. With Olivia's involvement things quickly go to hell, putting their daughter in serious danger.
