Summary
L'esprit de l'escalier (or l'esprit d'escalier), usually translated as "staircase wit", is the act of thinking of a response, argument or clever comeback when it is too late to deliver it.
Sherlock Holmes has been gone for three years, three years too long.
It has given him too much time to think of the things he should have said.John Watson is going through incredible grief after losing his most cherished friend.
How could everything have been different before the treacherous fall from Reichenbach if things had have been said and done? Will they ever be able to right their wrongs?

Summary
This story is part of the Melpomaen the Elfling universe.
Ereolas is the reborn King Oropher and is married to Cirdan. They live in Mithlond. He has decided to write his memoirs of when he was King of the Greenwood and also record the details of his life in Mithlond in anecdotal, diary form.
To familiarise yourself with the characters you could read Melpomaen the Elfling first, but it is not necessary.
Here is a brief synopsis of the events leading up to this story:
Melpomaen and Ereolas are Erestor and Legolas’ elflings. Ereolas is King Oropher reborn and so Legolas actually gave birth to his grand ada. Ereolas is able to speak, read, write, be a pain in the ass, as soon as he is born. Shortly after his birth, he demands his old throne back. His parents and the Valar, who prefer Thranduil as king, resist him. Ereolas accepts, in the end, that he will never be a king again and adopts a new hobby: researching and imposing the rules of etiquette. He terrorises everyone with etiquette.
Oropher’s soul mate is Cirdan and when he came of age they were married and moved to Mithlond. Recently, Ereolas has found that he carries the curse of Legolas.

A little girl who has spent lifetimes in limbo appeals to the team for help. Arthur and Eames, having recently decided to go halves on a safe-house, find themselves anything but safe as they try to bring the girl and her mother to Cobb's dream institute on the other side of the country. They are not the only ones with an interest in the girl, who is proficient in more than just dream-sharing. She challenges the idea that reality is as simply defined as "being awake." This story also follows the characters in a "through the years" ending, therefore, heed the warnings! I wanted to deal with loss, and in some cases, moving on, in a realistic way.
