Later, they’ll ask him, how do you prepare for a final? And he’ll tell them it’s just like any other match: practice, eat well, sleep well. He’ll be vague, and they won’t push. He won’t tell them this: that he spent the night before the Roland Garros final fucking Rafael Nadal.

Summary
Rafa stands still, and Roger suddenly knows how it is to feel out of place, disjointed and improbable. This is not his Rafa standing before him. This is a man he knows so profoundly, so completely that it is as if he is his other self; and yet here he stands, implacable and calm as the eye of a storm, unreachable. “I shouldn’t have come,” says Roger.

Summary
At first he welcomed the silence. To get away from the tennis stadium, to sit on his own, the sound of the traffic the merest whisper from the streets below, it was exactly what he wanted. He went over and over the match again, every shot that went wide or long, every ball that ended up in the net. But soon his thoughts strayed to the distraction: Rafa, standing in the dressing room before the match. Roger’s mind was in knots. Soon the silence became oppressive, too many questions, not enough answers. That single thought that overwhelmed all others: Rafael Nadal.

Summary
The flight to London was too long. He felt himself getting closer and closer to Rafa, kilometre by slow kilometre, and when he saw England below he felt his excitement rising as their altitude dropped. He had the entire evening planned out in his head. Pick up Rafa at six, fly to Manacor, arrive at eight. Then dinner, a long, late Spanish dinner, but not too late. By eleven, he wanted to be in bed, wrapping his tired legs and arms around Rafa’s body and finally, finally feeling his skin against his own. By the time the plane touched down he was shaking with impatience. (Set after Roger won Halle and Rafa won Queen's.)
