“It’s perfectly logical. We’re bound to be caught at some point together, and as far as I can see there’s no downside to connecting Mr. Warren to Mr. Wren socially. We’ll have an easier time explaining ourselves being together if we’re observed being together, and since you’ve vetoed all of my suggestions for activities that you could take up—“
“I’m not joining a bowling league, Harold,” John says firmly.

Summary
Finch has more than one reason to be a private person; especially considering how New York treats it's Guides. He is a bird that flies under the radar...hell, he built the radar. But there is a Sentinel in New York just as invisible as him, who pings in all the right (and so very, very wrong) ways.
How can you hide from someone who can track you anywhere you go?
More than that, why would anyone not want to connect to the other half of their soul?
In which there are good guys, bad guys, we don't know which guys, sentient Machines, coming back from soul level devastation, falling in love despite everything, Finch being a genius but still a bit thick and Reese basically being the kind of man who thinks trussed up bad guys totally count as a dozen red roses and a bow.

ImpSec analyst Harold Finch and ex-Armsman John Reese are both lonely outsiders; together, they fight crime. Though that will change, if Simon Illyan has anything to say about it.
AU-PoI/sorta-canon Vorkosiverse crossover (in other words, no one herein has ever seen New York). Some spoilers for Barrayar, but should be more or less comprehensible to all readers.

Summary
There wasn't a number. John knew there wasn't, because if there had been a number, Harold would have called him, and Harold hadn't. The sun was pouring in over his bed, almost too warm even with the heat off, dust motes floating and glinting gold: it was like lying in a dream. He could have rolled over and gone back to sleep. He got up instead.
