Kagome’s father is from a wealthy family. When he passes away after a love-match, leaving his family with a daughter and an unborn heir, it’s left to Kagome to help fix the mess he has created, as far as her strict grandmother is concerned. This is how, at the tender age of five, innocent Kagome is betrothed to the youngest son of a wealthy family. At her grandmother’s suggestion, Kagome and her betrothed begin to exchange letters until the intended day for their meeting – her fifteenth birthday – but all is not as it seems.

"No worries, mate. I'm shipping out to Afghanistan in a week," the man says in response, like it's no big deal. "There, now we've both tossed out complete non-sequiturs."
AKA a younger Sherlock and John meet outside a bar before John's first due to ship out to Afghanistan. It goes from there.
