Johnny Marcone kills a kid and leaves Chicago to lay low in Missouri. He meets Harlene 'Harry' Dresden. Then they get attacked by vicious redcaps, have to outrun a stampede of startled deer, survive meeting her over protective Wizarding Master, and maybe fall in love.
There's also the small matter of the wicked fairy scheme, lurking in the woods...

Post-apocalyptic Chicago: Harry Dresden, the itinerant Winter Knight, is contacted by the errant Sheriff Karrin Murphy. Something is brutally murdering people in Wisconsin, and the local militia is driving off anyone who tries to check it out.
