Summary
Dave Strider, a rebellious teenager, has grown up learning American Sign Language because of his half deaf brother. When John Egbert, who is mute, moves into the house next to him and starts public school for the first time in his life, it seems like fate that it would bring these two together so that Dave could help him through his school life and help him make friends. They could communicate, they were around the same age, and they were both teenage boys... too bad Dave kind of hates his guts. John’s not really too fond of this punk kid trying to be cool, either.... or maybe he is.

Karkat Vantas, a high school sophomore is starting his new school year, and his first day doesn't start out as he liked. He first misses the bus and has to be driven by his older cousin, Kankri who he depises, and on his way to get his schedule, he bumps into someone who leaves flustered and without an apology. Karkat, being himself, gets pissed because he (the other teen) left without one. He later learns that the boy he collided with, is named John Egbert, a 15-year old transferee teen from Washington and the thing is, He's mute.

Dave is the new kid, an ironic jock, and a cool mystery. He's intrigued by the quiet kid and it isn't long before he develops a crush. Even though John's friends make it difficult for Dave to get close to him, but the cool kid is determined.
This is the story of two boys who stumble through the awkwardness of young love and a communication barrier. Meanwhile a rejected friend and a stubborn brother meet and struggle to understand their own feelings.
