Summary
Merlin Emrys, supernatural expert and consultant for the local police, knows that going to the opening night of a vampire bar isn't a good idea, not with anti-vampire sentiments running rampant. So when he draws the eye of the bar's charismatic owner, and the new Master of the City, Arthur Pendragon, he's not exactly pleased.
When a series of murders, seemingly the work of vampires, forces them to work together anyway, Merlin unwittingly finds himself falling in love. Suddenly, the lines between work and love are not as cut and dry as they seem.

Summary
The magical party spearheaded by Balinor Emrys wins the general elections, if by a thread. While some see this as a chance to reform current discriminatory laws against magic, others loathe the idea. The day Mr Emrys accepts the Queen's request to form the next government is also the day his enemies choose to act, orchestrating an assassination attempt. The attack also seems geared towards taking out the PM's conspicuously magical son, eighteen-year old, Merlin.
The aftermath is pure confusion. With Merlin's bodyguard down, Mr Emrys is forced to seek another one despite his son's firm refusal to lose somebody else.
Enter ex-serviceman and ex close protection expert Arthur Pendragon. In a climate of general suspicion Arthur becomes Merlin's new bodyguard and finds out just how difficult sticking to duty may be when he's growing closer and closer to the man he's due to protect.

Its cover was faded, the embossed letters of the title worn of any of their original gilt so that the only way to properly read it was to run the pads of your fingers over them and try to match them with any letter you knew. Gwen didn't need to do that, she knew the title, as she knew the whole book, entirely by heart. It had been her favourite companion since before she knew how to read; her father would read her all the stories in it in his soft, soothing voice. Gwen would curl up beside him and be lulled to sleep by tales of princesses and the smell of fire that still clung to her father's clothing. Once she had learned, she would read to him, first in a halting, apprehensive voice and then later in the unhurried tones of a woman greeting an old friend."
