It had taken her years to get over it when she finally grasped the truth and by that point, she realized that she was better off. She made a promise to herself to always keep that devastating feeling in mind and always remember that nothing good could ever come of leaving her heart in someone else's hands.
She’d done well in that respect in the 8 years in between. Hadn’t once relied on a man for anything other than a basic bodily need. And then it was on her terms. No one ever spent the night and she always returned home.
