It's been six years- and even though he's no longer a soldier, every night John Watson still goes to war.
So why then is he not afraid of the dark?-In which John has discovered a new purpose (which has been a lot scarier than chasing murders through London alongside a madman), struggles through nightmares (that are always never quite the same), and Sherlock finally decides to let everyone know- for the record, in case anyone out there still cares- that he's not ACTUALLY dead (hint: they do; they care);
Naturally his return causes John to question more than just his coping strategy (he should have expected it, really), and the result makes Sherlock curious about something he never thought would interest him: being part of a family.

Summary
John is a soldier, first and foremost, and Sherlock is not the first friend he’s seen die. If it was worse than the others, if it hurt more…well, he puts that down to the unexpectedness of it. Death is a part of war, but even knowing that London is a battleground could not prepare him for the sight of his best friend falling to his death in front of his eyes.
But it’s over and done with now, and as much as it pains him, there is nothing more he can do. He left his last words and his longing thoughts at the graveyard, and if regrets sometimes haunt his dreams, well, no one else needs to know. -
