Summary
After a near ten-year shelf life, an old cold case file is reopened in Denmark with the death of a night guard at Copenhagen's Statens Museum for Kunst. Word travels fast to nearby police forces to be on the look out for the perpetrator. But when word reaches Ystad, the force is dragged into the case when one of them is found to have an unrealized involvement in the former case. On the run the perpetrator recognizes the old witness, and makes to do away with them before anything can come to light. Will the Ystad police have time to find their abducted officer? Or as the investigation spans the borders of Europe will they be forced to call in for some external help as the web of crime and complexities threatens to snare them all?

After being coerced by his roommate Dominick Cobb to take a class on the art and history of comic books, Arthur meets Eames, a cocky, British smartass, who after kicking the back of Arthur's chair in class one day to keep him awake has yet to break the habit. Arthur wants nothing to do with him, but upon discovering that Eames is good friends with Ariadne, (a girl he's been crushing on since meeting her last year in his physics class), decides to put up with his antics in order to get closer to her. Complications ensue when Arthur and Eames are paired up for the class project—creating their very own comic book. Herein lies a tale of deceit, misunderstandings, love lost, love found, and really, really bad comic books.

After an attempt on Cobb's life leaves him in hiding Arthur and Eames begin to look into who could have taken out the hit. While they are eating dinner an assassin tries to kill them as well. They quickly move in and save Ariadne and Yusuf but the four of them find that they are in way over their heads. They must find help in an extremely unlikely source and keep one step ahead of a man willing to put any price on their heads.

Notes: This takes place after Between the Notes, during Eames' final year at school. While I can't in all fairness label this as angst, I feel I should perhaps warn for something of an ambiguous ending, at least until I complete and post the next story in the series (which is mostly done, actually, but not quite ready for prime time.) I had planned to wait until all the big remaining story pieces were done but it occurred to me at last that this part is quite ready to go and putting it out there can only inspire me to work harder on getting the 'verse completed.
Also, Arthur is playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, which is a crazily ambitious thing for a 21 year old pianist to tackle.

This is a story about Arthur, who happens to love people and who happens not to love them. But the point is, this is a story about Arthur who doesn't know it's a story about him. This is story about finding out what it means to be a hero to the right people, what it means to know yourself and, by accident, to let other people learn to know how to love you.

Ariadne always seems to be reenacting other people's stories. After inception, school is too safe and extraction too risky; what turns out to be just right is a new career as a consultant in dreamsharing research with neuroscientists. But maybe that isn't right either. And Arthur draws her into dreaming and out of her safe, familiar life, and Eames drifts in and out of her life with equal parts revelry and revelations, but she doesn't want to be her namesake and be abandoned or saved. She wants to be the one finding her own way through the maze, the one to sail off into forever. If she plays her moves wisely she just might get everything she ever wanted.
