    Notes

Lovely, nostalgic, yet hopeful story. I liked so much the plethora of details through which the author shows this world and the emotions of characters...The characters are sketched so precisely even though it's so short a story: Laurence with his quiet sea longing, Jack with his cheerfulness and sympathy, distracted Stephen with his naturalist's passion... And it is so subtly funny that I can't stop the huge grin on my face every time I reread this. Great writing.

And she's completely open, vulnerable, with all her defenses and her pretensions down, so that it's just her on that bed and for once, for once she doesn't mind because she realizes that the only thing you want to do is make her happy so it's all right not to be cool, calm Dr. Scully, M. In 1816, Sir Thomas Cochrane was implicated in the Stock Exchange Fraud of 1814, fined a thousand pounds, sentenced to the pillory, struck from the Navy List and stripped of his knighthood. Patrick O’Brian used that for his novel the Reverse of the Medal, and this is the event as seen from Hornblower’s point of view.
