Summary
Marcus Aquila works for a branch of Special Ops called Task Force Jump. When, by chance, he spots the elusive Jumper, Griffin O'Conner, in a supermarket, he can't believe his luck. But when Marcus tries to capture him without weapons or back-up, he gets them both into a mess only Griffin can get them out of. The problem is, Griffin is in no fit state to help Marcus, let alone himself. And even if he could, why would he?

Thanks to awarrington for her lovely summary – I hate summarizing my own work! Dr. Marcus Aquila is an American teaching history at a university in England. There he meets Esca, a second year history student, and feels an immediate and overwhelming attraction - almost an obsession. But Esca's troubled past - in and out of foster care and a young offenders' home - has a strong influence on his attitudes, beliefs and behaviour, causing the path of their connection to be a very rocky one. This is a story about two complex men who are more similar than the other realises and whose beliefs have created a set of self-limitations that each of them struggles to overcome in order to find happiness.

When Marcus Flavius Aquila arrived at Isca Dumnoniorum to take command, there was an auxiliary troop of Dacian light cavalry already at the fort, led by Lutorius, who was 'reserved to the point of sullenness with all men' until the tribal revolt where Marcus was injured, and Lutorius was killed. I wondered why Lutorius was so grumpy, and how Marcus dealt with that.
