Sets in a alternate universe where slavery is commonly accepted in mafia circles. Marcus is an Italian mobster, Esca a slave from England, going from cage fights to becoming Marcus personal slave.Marcus, the heir of the Aquila family, has gotten shot by a police officer. He's back in Italy to recover. His uncle has brought him a slave, from England. Marcus' father has disappeared years ago in Glasgow, nobody knows what became of him. But because of Marcus injuries, he can't join his nephews in the family business to regain his honor. So he must set out for England to find what has happened to his father and where the symbol of their family, a golden eagle, is.

Inspired by Bunn's fic "Splendid Things Gleam in the Dust," this fic begins after hers ends. En route from Antinoöpolis, Marcus and Esca stop in Alexandria to board a ship back to Britain. But Esca is injured in a street accident, and they are taken to the clinic of a well-known physician. That physician is Chariton of Ephesus — in truth, Charis, a woman who has been practicing medicine in the guise of a eunuch for many years. This story is told through her eyes.

Writer's summary: Written in response to this prompt at the eagle_kink. Marcus and Esca are friends, maybe even flatmates. The thing is, Esca sleeps with a different person every other night but he never tries to get into Marcus's pants, even though he's pretty flirtatious in their everyday interactions. Maybe Marcus is pining after him, maybe he just feels sort of offended and left out, either way, there is a point when he just can't take it anymore.

Eventually nothing about her friends’ relationship makes sense. When Esca steps back and really looks at the picture in front of her, there is no single problem to address. It is a myriad of problems, and those problems keep multiplying and multiplying.
