Thanks to awarrington for her lovely summary – I hate summarizing my own work! Dr. Marcus Aquila is an American teaching history at a university in England. There he meets Esca, a second year history student, and feels an immediate and overwhelming attraction - almost an obsession. But Esca's troubled past - in and out of foster care and a young offenders' home - has a strong influence on his attitudes, beliefs and behaviour, causing the path of their connection to be a very rocky one. This is a story about two complex men who are more similar than the other realises and whose beliefs have created a set of self-limitations that each of them struggles to overcome in order to find happiness.

Summary
After the return of the Eagle, Rome is not done with Marcus Aquila. He and Esca are persuaded to infiltrate a group of potential conspirators -- possibly-traitorous men about whom there are yet other shameful rumors, stories of debauchery and vice. What do they get up to at their dinner-parties? To find out the truth, Marcus and Esca must pretend to be lovers, but it is a difficult thing to pretend to be what Marcus so badly wishes they could be in truth. (Or: Marcus and Esca go undercover as gay at an orgy.)

Esca, son of Cunoval, has known from childhood how his life will be. When he first feels the soulbond in his mind, he will be made a man of the Brigantes. He will be inked. He will become a warrior. In a few years, his soulmate will come in search of him from a neighboring clan. His soulmate will be proud of him, proud that Esca is heir to a clan chieftain, proud that Esca will one day be lord of five hundred spears. They will marry. They will lead the clan together. It will be a good life.
Then Esca discovers his soulmate is a Roman soldier. This is, shall we say, problematic.
