Summary
Dean Winchester and his younger brother Sam are finally without a hunt, and they can deserve to relax and get on with their lives at school; that is, until Dean meets Jimmy Novak, a piano player and generally nice guy who is being used as a vessel for an angel, bringing him torment and turmoil. Dean promises to help Jimmy by getting rid of the angel called Castiel, freeing him from the pain. However, the brothers find themselves slowly becoming friends with Cas, despite initially vowing to kill him, and he proves helpful as they track down a Japanese ghost who turns her victims into frosted corpses. But who will they choose to stay in the body of Jimmy? Can they break their promise to their human friend and let him suffer for the sake of Cas, or will they have to murder the angel so that Jimmy can have a normal life again?

Spoilers for "Heart." Dean watched Sam leave the room with anguish in his eyes and a gun in his hand, and his heart shattered. He could only think about the happy future his little brother could have...should have...had with the werewolf waiting to die. A lifetime flashes before his eyes in a second, a world of possibilities that will never come to be because the world is just that unfair.
Dean sees a happy future that his brother could have, should have had, as Sam walks away, before the sound of a gunshot shatters the illusion, and reminds him of what the world really is.

Summary
The war between heaven and hell is dragging on, and the body count is getting increasingly personal for Sam and Dean. Lucifer is out of patience and out of time. Working with a heavenly turncoat, he ambushes the boys in the Nevada desert, spiriting Sam away to an oubliette with the intent of torturing and tempting him until he consents to embrace his destiny as Lucifer's vessel. Losing Sam is Dean's final straw - he abandons the mission, grows increasingly distant from Castiel, and throws all his energy into finding and saving Sam.
Sam's first temptation is an appeal to his White Knight complex - will he consent in order to save the damsel in distress?
The second temptation is family - he is offered enough power to restore his dead family to life.
The final temptation is Dean, who despite an unexpected assist from a mysterious stranger, is rapidly losing hope of reaching Sam in time.
