The only time I ever got mad at Lorelai was when she promised to help Luke paint the diner, but instead, ended up having sex with Christopher.
And Luke's attitude when she painted it without him irritated me to no end. He acted like it was fine and everything was peachy keen, when, in fact, the only reason he agreed to paint was because Lorelai was going to be there, and they were going to do it TOGETHER , not because he wanted the diner painted.
So this is MY version of what should have happened!

This story was written right after the 5th season finale, "A House Is Not a Home." Of course, this isn't how the first episode of S6, "New and Improved Lorelai" turned out. But for a couple of months this *could* have been the way it went.
To Recap – Mitchum Huntzberger told Rory she wasn't cut out to be a journalist. Feeling rejected and depressed, she decided not to return to Yale in the fall, causing a huge argument and a serious rift between Rory and Lorelai.
Rory moved into Emily and Richard's pool house. So Lorelai, turning to the one person she knew would always be there for her, and would always be on her side, goes to Luke.
