    Summary

George Lysander, a poet, ex-heroin addict, and former Chassidic Jew from Brooklyn and Jonathan Bates, a rich kid whose best-friend-slash-ex-step-cousin doesn’t love him “like that”, join together on an adventure to find where “That” is; That mysterious place you end up when you fall in love with someone like that. It’s never been defined what “like that” even is. George and Bates decide if they’re ever going to find “that” with anyone, they should not confuse sex with love. So they make the decision: Have sex with each other, and find true love and “that” out in the black and white world. Society demands us to be labeled, diagnosed and defined, but Bates and George live in a constant in between state of gay and straight, sobriety and addiction, depression and optimism, adults and just stupid kids, best friends and something much more. In a black and white world they are shades of grey and those blurred lines in between loving someone, and loving someone “like that”. They prefer the mystery of their ambiguous existence than to be just one of anything. But when they find "That" together, George and Bates head down a drug addled path toward the feared and the inevitable: Facing, accepting, and defining who you really are.

    Summary

In Vine Station, Alabama, the summer air gave no shits about humanity as it mercilessly increased to an oppressive heat while maintaining a suffocating humidity.

Alaska Young fanned herself as she sat outside on the back porch with one of her mother’s funeral fans, one those round ones with cheesy bible passages printed on them, which the funeral people think make funeral attendees cheer up but instead just makes people feel guilty for wanting to laugh at how cheesy they are.

    [...]

Alaska slammed her feet into a pair of flip flops and ducked inside to grab a flashlight from the kitchen drawer. “Going out,” she wrote on a little post it note, and stuck it on the screen door. “Won’t be more reckless than usual.”

“Ah - sorry, matchmaker?” John interrupted, leaning forward to look at Alaska around Sherlock’s slouched form. “That isn’t what you told me when-"

“Well, clearly, Johnny-boy. Why would I tell you my true motives if they would drive you far, far away?”
