“Me?” There was a moment of genuine surprise as Jack peered at his captor, attempting to make out enough of the man’s expression to gauge it. His thoughts turned and tumbled, came together and pulled apart with nothing to show for it. After years of exclusion, of being ignored, his mind was not fast to provide a reason why someone might require him. “But I don’t have anything else.”
“Nonsense.” The form of the man blurred, dissolved – and when the voice came again, it was much nearer his ear, so close that he could feel the warmth of breath. “You have the most important thing of all.” The touch came without warning, uncomfortably hot fingers skirting the back of his neck. Jack jerked – gasped – spun around, hands up before him, to find nothing there. “Fear,” said the voice, low and insinuating, and the chuckle that pealed from it was like a funeral bell.

After Sherlock's funeral, John Watson leaves the flat on Baker Street and tries to move on. Soon, he meets the flawless Mary Morstan. John loves her, but thoughts and feelings for Sherlock begin to take over his mind and make him question the nature of the friendship they used to have, and the relationship he has begun with Mary. John knows that it's too late to turn back, and though danger is close at hand, he refuses to lose anyone else he loves.
Sherlock Holmes doesn't take the lonely months well. Old cravings and wants begin to change him, and cocaine becomes his new best friend. But even the drugs can't make him forget what he needs to live for: John Watson. And he'll do anything to get his old life back, even if it means risking his own life in the process.

When first they ascend, Jack spins in circles like a child taking in the sky during the grandest of sunsets. The walls, the ceiling, the pallet upon the floor: he has praise for them all.
Loki’s intuition is that the boy makes mock of him, of this place that is all he can call his own. The stab of betrayal is small but sharp, until Jack admits that, before this day, he has not been invited inside. It is new for him, the whole of it; it is marvelous to him, for he has known nothing else.
Wariness loosens its hold upon Loki’s heart, and there is something softer to take its place. In the wake of the revelation, Jack’s enthusiasm is suddenly, wretchedly, understandable.

Greenery is strung here and there as though Mother Nature has been convinced to lend a hand in decorating, thick pine wreaths and garlands that set off glittering candles. It is, Jack thinks, the best place he has ever seen, and he has had a hundred and fifty years to look.
He knocks at the door, this first time. He assumes that it will be as it ever is, that he will wait until the way is cleared and then pass, unnoticed, within. He is wrong, though -- and for an instant the joy of it eclipses all else. The furry creatures can see him. They can see him, and he feels irrationally grateful for it until the instant that they turn him away.
