Remembering the past so he can use it to try to change the future will never change it enough to make him forget what he knows; everybody dies for him. If he spares the ones he loves, the machines win. If he sacrifices them, there is no rule that says it won’t all be for nothing anyway. It’s harder than anyone would ever believe to know the future before it happens.
