Captain Ukitake finds himself focusing more on recovering in addition to possible truces and alliances than fights as he spends time alone with Stark. Kyouraku ultimately has his hands full waiting for his friend's safe return and assisting others while Zaraki forces his way back to Hueco Mundo from the fake Karakura Town battlefield.
However, as the Winter War seems to wind down, Aizen has a fair more sinister and less straightforward goal in mind. And it might just be that the differences between shinigami and arrancar are not so great as appearances might suggest.

Summary
This entire story is based "2000 years ago", when Kyouraku and Ukitake were still at the Academy. It had lots of accurate sword play, and a lot of fights, but it also has a very sweet shonen-ai sort of romance, which is denied by Kyouraku, between the two Academy boys.
This is an account of how Ukitake and Kyouraku got their shikai at the same time, so that no one could tell which one got it before the other, as Yamamoto told it. It's also got the beating that Yamamoto gave them, and more about what Soul Society was like back 2000 years ago. It has some historical facts in it, but is not entirely historically accurate. Please accept my apologies for any inaccuracies. Incandescens is my beta for this series, without her, this would not exist.
