from tww: - I read Wellman's Who Fears the Devil? like seventeen times when I was a kid, I was absolutely obsessed with them and the world they described - magic and song and stories and strangeness in the midst of the mundane, folksy and scary. I was so excited to see this fandom on the yuletide list, and this story did not let me down. Reading this fic is just exactly like reading those stories again, so perfectly does it capture the tone and atmosphere of the originals. It's a story that does full justice to John and all his magic, but at the same time allows the damsel to rescue herself; it's a story, like the original stories, about the small but powerful magic contained in every act of hospitality. This is one of those yuletide stories that you never even IMAGINE you could get until you get it.
