The characters are part of a hidden society of magi with a class system based on the Color of magic that a person uses, which has some interesting parallels to the hemospectrum. The kids need to put aside their petty differences to protect their hidden school from a conspiracy of insane Blue magi. Hilarity (and drama) ensues. Also Doc Scratch is good, and John is not. Allegedly better than it sounds.
