Summary
On the final day of term in Sherlock’s final year, he takes a prefect called James Hathaway to an empty room in the dormitory. Sherlock doesn’t even remember that afternoon until halfway through the tedious case in Oxfordshire, when Hathaway bows his head over the third body and Sherlock watches Lestrade watching the long and lovely tendons in the boy’s overbred English neck.

Summary
Inspector Greg Lestrade and Sergeant James Hathaway have been sent on a 'getting to know you' holiday following the conclusion of an undercover case, everything had been planned for them and privacy was almost guaranteed.
They'd both agreed not to take their relationship further until the murderers had been caught but now there is nothing to stop them.
this can be read as a missing scene from the When Murders are committed and the police can't be trusted who are you going to call or it can be read as an independent story of Lestrade and Hathaway getting to know each other and falling in love

Summary
There have been ten kidnappings and five murders over the last year, three undercover operations have provided no information although there have been murders within days of the end of the operation.
When you decide you cannot trust the people you are working with what options do you have. If you are DI Greg Lestrade the answer is simple, find yourself a minor Government official, a consulting detective and a doctor, call Oxfordshire police to borrow a DI and a DS and set about your own investigation.
