There are things that designations accept; regardless of their personal feelings, they don't try to change them. Things like the fact that you procreate once you've found a mate, you don't let a red-zone Canidae bond bite you, and when a mate dies, you mourn and move on with life without them. Summary
Bucky makes his way into the kitchen. He feels tired and slow, worn out from the last mission even after eight hours of sleep. Steve hadn't been there when he'd crashed into bed and Bucky wasn't sure he'd be there when he woke up. Captain America didn't really have a schedule.
Except Steve is there, humming along to softly playing music, wearing some faded old sweats and an army t-shirt. The sun is dipping below the horizon and everything is warm and gold.

Steve had things under control; his status was his own secret, and so long as he was alpha enough to lead the team on the battlefield, he could fit himself quietly into the cracks for the rest of the time. No need to fight anybody for dominance, because the serum's gift of full control over his status and sexuality meant he could be as neutral as a child when he wanted to be. Which mostly, he did. He kept the past in the past, and his junk in his pants, and called it success, but life, biology, and luck have a way of bringing hidden things to the surface, and the truth about Steve's status is the very least of the secrets about to come bubbling to the surface.
