Cotillion! I do love that book. The language here is a delight: "Anyone less impressed with himself would almost certainly have turned to drink, gaming or ill-advised company as a balm to his depressed spirits, but Mr. Jack Westruther was so armored by detachment and wit that he barely had need to develop resilience of spirit."
