She does adequately, but soon, his illness progresses more quickly than she likes and he must be taken to the hospital. And when Social Services comes calling, Karkata's not about to go quietly. She runs away in the direction of friends a couple states away to avoid the agent, and along the way she eventually finds a rag tag team of kids her own age who, in addition to not having homes or families other than each other, put the "fun" in "dysfunctional".
