Summary
In which a homeless child follows Sherlock home one day, and he isn't as heartless as one might think. This has been edited; the phrase CPS has been removed and replaced with Social Services, because I realized it was an Americanism too late. Sorry for any confusion.

Summary
Twenty-year-old Sherlock Holmes may have many reasons for living rough on the streets of London, but if he thought it would expose him to a less predictable variety of humankind, he had been sorely disappointed — until the day he encounters charming American visitor Neal Caffrey. Unravelling why Neal's sterling mannerisms don't quite mesh with his counterfeit style might be even more exhilarating for Sherlock than combining their talents to escape a spot of international trouble. The two young men teach each other many things during their adventure — including subtle lessons that take some time to sink in.
Teaser:
He pulled off his gloves and proffered a handshake, needing as much information as he could get on this sleek patchwork of a gentleman before he offered an answer — Sherlock was enthralled by the way the man's conscious lies and inadvertent truths almost fit together, but not quite; near-invisible seams burnished by careful attention, like the repairs to a cherished heirloom.. The Story: Standard Supernatural Disclaimer: Supernatural will always be one of those weird fandoms for me where I heard the podfic before ever seeing the show or ever reading a fanfic. I've now watched the show (♥), but still have yet to ever actually read (silently, to myself) a fanfic. It seems (as of right now) to be a podfic-only fandom for me. What can I say, podfic is my gateway drug to other fandoms.
As always, when I rec a podfic, it stands a both a rec for the story itself and the reading of the story, because both have to resonate with me in order for me to actually enjoy the podfic. In From the Cold is a glorious hurt/comfort story featuring homeless!Jenson and medic!Jared. It's the kind of sweet, fascinating, winding tale, with incredibly well-drawn-out characters, each with their own distinct personality and backstory. The characterization here is amazing. Not one of the characters felt superfluous. Each feels like a whole person who grew organically into the story.
I don't really want to give too much of the plot away, but I will say that it walks that wonderful fine line of not moving so quickly that you feel you got run over by a truck, but still keeping me completely enraptured. As an aside, I have a squick surrounding consent. I don't like to read fics that try to romanticize sex between two people, where one can't or won't consent. Because of the basic premise of this fic, I was a little concerned, but I shouldn't have been. ladyjanelly deals with the relationship between Jared and Jenson with a sure touch and a great deal of compassion. There is an underlying beauty to this fic that just sweeps me away, every time I listen to it.
I'm going to close this out as saying that this is a J2 that is so AU that you could easily change all the names and pretend it's not Supernatural. So even if SPN is not your fandom of choice, go and read or listen to this fic, and enjoy it as a piece of original fiction. It's beautiful and you won't be disappointed.
The Reading: This podfic was read jointly by three podficcers: paraka, diurnal_lee, kronos999. The story is structured so that each section is from the POV of a specific character, so the readers set it up so that each podficcer got one (or more) characters whose sections they read (e.g. paraka reads all the Jenson sections). I wasn't sure how much I would like this set-up. I was afraid that I'd feel tossed and turned. It. Worked. Perfectly. Each of these readers is incredibly smooth and they all read beautifully. The glory of set-up is that each of the characters' sections are embodied with this innate, unique personality, which adds a depth to the podfic I wasn't expecting. After finishing the podfic, I couldn't imagine it being approached any other way. The result was not just an incredible 5+ hour podfic that kept be entranced, but a fire_juggler who is rabidly seeking out all the podfics she can by all of these readers. So go forth and experience this wonderful podfic! It will uplift you in so many ways.

He barely even notices the ones who pull his hair or slap him or call him filthy names; it's nothing he's not used to. He's taken much, much worse for years; at least now he's getting paid for it...
Another brief scene out of young Gojyo's hardscrabble lost years between losing Jien and meeting Banri; contains non-explicit but potentially disturbing references to underaged male prostitution, and indirect references to past physical and emotional child abuse.
