It's Summerlyn, 1992, and Brendon's getting tired of keeping secrets about herself. From her taste in music to her lack of interest in finding suitable marriage material, she knows that there are a lot of things about her that would break her parents' heart. On top of all of that, Brendon's in high school, she's kind of desperately lonely, and she's also pretty sure she's gay.
It's only after she starts hanging out with Z, Tennessee, and Greta, a group of friends who call themselves riot grrrls, that things seem to go right for Brendon, and she finally starts to realize that the one heart she needs to worry about the most isn't her mom's or dad's. It's her own.
