Summary
Girl!Merlin and Arthur are best friends. When Merlin tells Arthur she has never seen a naked man Arthur volunteers. The only snag is that Merlin is blind, and uses her fingers to see.
At that moment, Arthur has one of his more inspired ideas. It might be sheer boredom, or sympathy with his best friend, or it might just be one of those times his brain-to-mouth malfunction actually picks up on something in his subconscious – lifts it to the surface and waves it around.

The voice calling out to her turns out to be a dragon, who seems a bit shocked when she arrives, like he wasn’t expecting her--like he wasn’t summoning her, even. And he keeps calling her “young warlock” before correcting himself, and yes, Merlin is flat-chested, but she’s also wearing a skirt. Season One as it might have been if Merlin were born female.

This is one of the earliest (possibly the first) genderswap fics in the Merlin fandom and it is well worth the read. There is little to no pronoun confusion (that is, Merlin is not suddenly thinking of himself as a girl and those who know who he is continue to refer to him as if he were male), the characterizations are delightful, and the smut is quite hot.

Merlin outwits himself. Arthur isn't as dumb as people like to think he is. Morgana is awesome. What more needs saying? The only thing I love more than fairy tale adaptations are fairy tale adaptations that could fit into canon.
