Summary
They have made you this, they have done this to your friends and their family, killed our parents, partially destroyed our siblings, and then done it to you and them. This place, this laboratory, this is the only place you remember.
You are a pet, an animal, a creature that is thought to be as mindless as a piece of dirt and treated as such. And your friends and their relatives? No better. Some modified with wings, others with similar such oddities.
Sometimes you wonder if you will ever leave this place of torture filled with screams and pain...Bookmarked by Shinju_Tori

Summary
John Crocker has just graduated from medical school as an experimental physician who performs experiments on synthetic humans--artificial humans created in labs and implanted with chips to inhibit emotion and independent though, making them the perfect substitute for natural humans in testing. John's experiments have already greatly improved the quality of life of all humans, and he's expected to revolutionize the entire field of study. But when he receives one of the first of a new line of synthetic humans from his dad as a graduation present, everything changes. This prototype is vastly superior to others previously made, but the alterations to its genetic makeup have made it incompatible with previously made emotion-inhibiting chips. Until one can be manufactured, John has to go about his work on a test subject with a mind and will of its own, and he'll find his own conceptions sorely tested.

It wasn't often that the Captain had the opportunity to second-guess his own assertions, unless they were handed to him on a silver platter along with a kick in the ass. Jim Kirk supposed it was as good a moment as any to reconsider his attention to ion storms and dimensional physics in particular when he found himself facing down his First Officer, +1 sudden and inexplicable Van Dyke beard, and one of the most terrifying criminals Star Fleet had ever had the misfortune to tangle with.

Summary
Eventually, the man will become a memory, settling into the morass of the faces he's worn and the people he's been, but not yet. Now he sits near the surface of Derek's thoughts, making him jittery and hyper aware of his surroundings. Nothing feels right yet. Won't for a long time.
Which isn't new. He's lived with that sensation since the day he decided to follow Laura's example and enlist.
