Desde antes de que Madge pueda recordar, ha estado huyendo de los ataques de su madre antes de que le diera por la morfina debido a los recuerdos que los Juegos del hambre en los que participó Maylisee, pero es desde su doceavo cumpleaños cuando, por accidente, aprendió cómo cruzar la valla del bosque y refugiarse del mundo del Capitolio y los distritos. Desde aquel día, la joven no ha vuelto a dar rienda suelta a su sentimientos en forma de lágrimas, pero tras la cosecha en la que Katniss ha salido voluntaria decide huir y refugiarse allí. Sin embargo, no es la única que ha ido al bosque con esa idea, y a Gale no le hace ni pizca de gracia que una chiquilla llorona y rica le interrumpa cuando está en uno de sus peores momentos.
