Ed could untie knots in the fifth and sixth dimensions -- blindfolded -- and he could convince the military he fell through a rabbit-hole, and he could even shut down a Drachman invasion (with a little help), but he can't seem to avoid dating Roy Mustang or to sort out which general is trying to destabilize Amestris from within. Only one of these is okay.

She was holding his hands, her thumb absently drifting back and forth over his knuckles. There were violins playing somewhere, for god’s sake. He should have been attempting to listen in on Edison again, or passing information to her in code, or something, but all he could think was that she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen and that it was becoming a problem.

Summary
There's a particular reason that Riza Hawkeye is so driven to protecting Roy Mustang. It's about a promise she made in her youth - a promise she's unable to break, or else.
This started as basically a wacky TVTropes Wild Mass Guessing theory about Hawkeye, and over time I decided I wanted to make it into an actual fic. Spoilers aplenty for both Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, especially the latter. Also, may or may not add archive warnings or more relationship/characters tags as the story goes on. But don't be fooled by how many there are; romance is definitely not the point of this story.

With nothing left in Amestris to live for, Roy Mustang has decided to seek out the Gate, to join the man who still haunts his thoughts, years later. But he feels obliged to give someone else a chance whom he knows love Edward Elric as much as Roy does. It's the least he can do for her, after all he's taken from Winry Rockbell.
Post-COS. One-sided EdWin, eventual RoyEd. Later stories in the series may involve other pairings as well. First chapter has had some substantial edits, let me know what you think!
