Tezuka looked around the large, elegant drawing-room, with its couple of dozen men being served drinks and canapes by soberly dressed waiters. He had no intention of meeting someone he liked. He couldn't think of anything more disastrous for his career.

Notes
One of the best parts about this AU where Ryoma doesn't meet Tezuka until they're both adults is how it highlights their growth in the series. Ryoma without Seigaku is wilder but stunted, and far more like his father than should be comfortable for either. Tezuka without Ryoma shows all his worst flaws: driven, closeted, dishonest. He excelled without his team, but never made the connections that would have made him comfortable being himself with anyone. The author has a deft touch for the internal destruction when these two force each other to change at last.
