Stiles didn’t want to bother him, and he was happy for him, he was, but at the same time he felt lonelier than he had in a very long time. And Derek needed something to help keep him sane while he wasn’t searching for Boyd and Erica. They both needed a distraction, and that’s exactly what they were to each other. Until they kind of… weren’t just that anymore.

(He doesn’t like going into the future. It gives him a headache and there’s a lot of pollution.) He can’t go back before late ancient Greece. He can travel from country to country. He doesn’t age in the modern world. (He’s spent six months in late eighteenth century America and he grew two inches there, but when he got back he was still twelve, still short, and still in seventh grade English.)

"I just downloaded MST3K's Red Zone Cuba. We should watch it and then maybe we should fuck," Stiles says in a steady voice. Someone loved Stiles too, but the lessons he learned were forgotten or transmuted about the time his Mom's teas started to overflow from their kitchen cupboards because no one was drinking them and from time to time Stiles or his dad would forget and buy more when they went shopping.
Derek shrugs and looks simultaneously bored with the world and dismayed by Stiles' blue room and the person who dwells in it. "Why not?""

Even in Beacon Hills the dangers aren't always supernatural. There's plenty that is supernatural, of course, and sometimes that can include the solution as well as further danger. Even though this can mean playing with fire.
It wasn't Scott he called once he regained consciousness. Or Derek, even though Derek Hale was the first person to spring to mind when he thought of being slammed into walls, when he tasted and smelled and breathed blood.
No, it was his father that he speed-dialed and his father who came to him where he crouched in the alley, clutching her hand as she wheezed out her last bubbling breaths. It was his father's pained blue eyes that he met as the paramedics swarmed over them both, pulling her away even though it was obviously too late, she was already dead, touching him and shining lights in his eyes and asking him over-loud questions.
It was his father who elbowed his way through the paramedics, because it had been his father that he had called.
