Summary
In an world where they never played the game, the only way for Tavros to avoid being culled is for a highblood to take him as their slave. His matesprit is the obvious choice, but Gamzee finds himself deeply disturbed by the new found power imbalance.
While this is first and foremost a story about Gamzee and Tavros, it's also the first chapter in the Dark Season AU. Feferi's plans for the throne have been discovered and the group has to decide if they'll join her cause or stand by the reigning Empress.

AU Alternia, the kids still play sburb, but rather than a reality warping universe-birther, it's just a very large scale FLARP game. The kids become fast friends throughout the game. As time progresses, the kids begin to realize who and what they are, to society, to each other, and most of all- to themselves. The story in particular follows a sort of Princess and the Pauper tale, focusing mainly on Karkat and Feferi, and what awaits them in their coming of age. Unfortunately for them, life isn't as simple as Sgrub, and as Feferi ages, she realizes her duties to her empire- as well as all the underhanded and back-alleyway politics that go along with it. Karkat, on the other hand, becomes even more embittered with the status quo, and though he knows his tenuous friendship with Feferi still holds, he isn't sure how much longer that will be true. Eventual Fef/Kat vascillations, as well as other pairings as I feel appropriate.

Sweeps later, Gamzee is living up to his reputation as a high subjugglator, fighting the war against the lowbloods that dare to try to overthrow him. But he never thought to see his long lost friend come, quite abruptly, back into his life.
