It's like looking into a mirror. A weird mirror. One that sends you to another universe while you're asleep.
Karkat, along with all of his friends, both troll and human, go to sleep in their beds/recuperacoons like they do every night. Nothing out of the ordinary. They wake up and the first thing they notice is that they're lying right outside of their houses and hives. Curious and confused, some of them go inside and are confronted by a human/troll much like themselves, but the opposite gender. Some wake up and find their opposite right in front of them, and a few are woken up by their equally curious opposite.
On this alternate universe, the hemospectrum is backwards. Candy red and dark red are the sea dwellers, royalty. Tyrian purple is considered mutant and those with it hide themselves away, covering up their blood by wearing a grey symbol. It's just like the hemospectrum we already know, but, again, it's backwards.

Summary
In a universe where SBURB never existed and humans and trolls are from different parts of the same universe, the rule of the Condesce has spread to earth. The Condesce's long rule and influence had kept kindness as something that should be limited to one’s two red quadrants. When it came to everyone else it was all self interest and indifference to suffering or even enjoyment of it. Instead of culling all the humans the race was put to work and trolls were allowed to colonize the planet.
In exchange for the gift of life Karkat Vantas is given an unpleasant duty on the conquered Earth. Dave and his Bro had been on the run from the forces of the troll invaders. After Bro's demise in a confrontation Dave is captured and swears hatred for all trolls. Is there anything that could ever change that? What has become of John, Jade, and Rose? Can anyone stop the Condesce? Is it even worth trying?
