Summary
After you've survived angry Romulans, terminal velocity, the collapse of Vulcan, Enterprise security, a nerve pinch, an ice planet full of giant monsters, a sudden mind meld with significant emotional transference, experimental transwarp beaming, a raging Vulcan, firefights with more Romulans, a confrontation with your father's murderer, a twenty-five foot leap, three throttlings and at least as many episodes of dangling by your armpits over certain death — oh, and a black hole — who do you think you're going to go see?
~~~
Jim leaned forward in the command chair, aching elbows on aching knees, trying to draw just a little more strength from his crew in the aftermath of the insanity this very long day had become. A mixed blessing, the secret peculiarity passed down from his mother's family line: "emotional vampire" was a term she'd taught him to hate, but empathy didn't really cover the way they "fed" on other people's feelings, nourished and bolstered by emotion the same way most folks were sustained by food.
Notes
Complete, long, well-written plotty romance. An excellent Sentinel AU with Robert Downey Junior's Sherlock as a powerful Dark Sentinel in London and Jude Law's Watson as a powerful, newly-awakened Guide just returned from Army service in Afghanistan.
In a universe where Sentinels and Guides are known, Holmes and Watson still break all the rules and give Lestrade grey hairs.
There are several side-plots, lots of politics, teamwork, crime fighting, empathy, Sentinel-type spirit world & visions, and hot sex at the end.
“I have recently been made aware of a long-term... prisoner. He’s been in Torchwood’s custody since 1965, when the Director of Torchwood decided to keep him locked away permanently. Up to that point, I understand him to have been on our payroll since 1899.” Ianto raised his eyebrows at this, but didn’t interrupt.
She gave a slight nod of approval at his restraint. “But he and that long-ago head had some sort of falling out and that particular man took it into his head to try and-and break his former employee.” Had Miss Hartman’s face gone a little green as she said this? He thought that it had.
“The specifics of what was done to this man, this Captain Jack Harkness, are in a series of files that will be provided to you. However, the reason that I am having to deal with this is that since the early '70s, Captain Harkness has been the personal-” Miss Hartman stumbled a bit and then recovered. “The personal slave of the head of Torchwood.”
Ianto’s eyes widened and he was amazed to find that he was actually feeling shocked (it was the first time in a long while that he’d felt anything other than numbness or grief), but again, he didn’t interrupt.
“Now, Mr. Jones, if you are as I am, you will agree that this state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue. We at Torchwood may take prisoners and study alien life, but slavery hasn’t been allowed in Britain since 1833 and Torchwood shall abide by her laws.”
