A modern fantasy AU in which forgers are actual literal shapeshifters, or are rumoured to be--even if nobody's ever seen it happen. Nobody's quite sure of the extent and impact of magic topside, and nobody quite understands exactly what forgers really are. Even the forgers themselves.
(Inspired by Howl's Moving Castle, in which Eames is analogous to Howl and Arthur to Sophie and Yusuf to Calcifer. Y'know, if you squint. It gained a mind of its own and the similarities have been somewhat distorted.)
