In the carriage, his owners slept soundly.
Adrian had time to study them by the moonlight. His mistress - she was an enigma, a dangerous one. She was the most powerful fighter he’d ever seen, but she seemed content to let Rhys dote on Adrian - even allowing him on the seats of the carriage. She had looked so sweet and lost, in the pub, but now she seemed powerful to him, with her regal braids and the hidden lines along her forehead and beside her eyes. She did look benevolent in her sleep, but so did most people.
Rhys was a different puzzle, one of perception. In his fever dreams and daydreams, and furtive desperate sex dreams, Adrian had altered Rhys into someone taller and darker and always somber. It was difficult to reconcile that image with the man who was drooling onto his wife’s shoulder, who had boomed with laughter as he told Adrian the gossip he was supposed to remember if he wanted to make his way around the village.

The Court is there to control Shadow Magic. One half is Light, while the other is Dark. To be able to use Shadow Magic, you must have suffered an extreme psychological trauma. Having a piece of Horcrux inside of you and dying is a perfect example. Thus, the Ward comes to the Court by the Moirae (the Fates).
Except, the Ward isn't just any person, he is already touched by the wings of Destiny through a prophecy. Watch out Hogwarts, Harry Potter is there with an alternative magic to be backed on.

This starts at the end of the Maurader's fifth year, and then continues on. There is a ton of shipping in this story, but no smut, it's mostly fluff. We see how James and Lily start to get together, why Remus is cautious about starting a relationship with Tonks later in his life, what happens to make Sirius so bitter about everything, why Peter is the way he is, and we find out why Voldemort thinks it's Harry on that fateful night instead of Neville. And there's a freaking lot of fight scenes.
