The music and noise of the town met them at the gate, and they swept up the main street towards the square. There were jugglers on corners, musicians playing for pennies with wide wooden bowls at their feet, bright streamers strung across the width of the road. They reached the square, and across it, Elinor saw sweet, sad Mistress Alys, her arm tight and possessive in her son’s while Margaret stiffened to alertness beside her, and all the long years of anxious secrecy were nothing, because of course he’d grown up handsome, just as Margaret had grown up fine.
