He had made sure that both of the sturdy white cups and saucers were scrubbed free of any lingering brown stains, despite the age of the service and the effort it took, because it bothered him to think that Skip—oh, or Douglas—might put his mouth on something that wasn’t perfectly clean. It just didn’t seem right. Besides, Arthur’s job as official Steward of Mum’s airdot, My Jet Now, was helping, and little things like scouring the cups and drawing smiley faces with his forefinger in the ground coffee before he set the pot to brew and making sure that Skip’s hat didn’t have even a smidgen of lint on the top or smudges on the shiny visor and always being ready to answer the call button from the cockpit and remembering how really lucky they all were to have a fantastic pilot like Skip—and Douglas, of course—flying G-ERTI; well, they just mattered. A lot.
