He knows he must never lose the watch he was once given by a very kind, but very misguided man who though he saw something in Sherlock worth saving. He knows that in 1999, he became fascinated by the case of a schoolboy named Carl Powers, and that was what led him to become a consulting detective. He doesn’t know what it felt like.

The Master is different. He has had more chances that anybody else will ever be given, but still the Doctor forgives him. Completely. It’s partly because forgiving those who don’t deserve it is what he does, and partly because he assumed that without his forgiveness the Master would never get better. And he needs the Master to get better. It occurs to him now, for the first time, that the perhaps the Master doesn’t need his forgiveness. And that, perhaps, he actually deserves to be forgiven.
