Summary
The problem with a modern-day Holmes AU is that a world without Victorian Holmes would be a very different world than ours. So the only way I can make it work is to have modern!Holmes the victim of cruel parental naming practices. He retreated into the life of the mind and avoided pop culture as much as possible as self-defense against the constant barrage of Conan Doyle references! And when he realized as a result he was only suited to be a consulting detective, he cursed the cruel irony of the world!

You feel absolutely ridiculous the first time you touch yourself to her image. Under the flicker of the TV as you lay in bed and whisper her unfamiliar name onto the pillow, where you’ve nestled so many prayers, her name seems like just another one you’ve learned in Sunday school. The words feel awfully sweet on your tongue, somehow.
