Summary
I glimpse my beloved through stone lace
That is all that keeps me alive each night
Too much! To unveil that flame-like face
Moth-drunk, I would burn in that light

Summary
I was called "inscrutable" by a man who had never smiled at me in an entire year, who sometimes responded to my "Good morning," with a little tip of his patrician head, as though speech was something he'd have to hold in reserve for someone who counted.

Notes
A brilliant backstory for a walk-on character that creates the same complex history as the book does. The prose is poetic and deceptively simple, and full of how the sea affects sailors whether they leave it behind or not.
