Summary
[Modern AU] The story takes place in the modern day USA. Darien "Darken" Rahl is CEO of a multi-million dollar industry with designs on becoming a state senator. By his birthright he is also Lord Rahl, a position he guards jealously. To his security chief Denna's disgust, Rahl takes a young officer, Cara Mason, to be his intern.
Kahlan Amnell, former ADA, tracks down Zedd to ask for his help. Rumours are that a Shadow Book of Accounts exists which contains evidence that will destroy Rahl's political ambitions and likely land him in jail. Zedd denies having the book but does confess to Richard that he once worked for Rahl and that he is Richard's grandfather – Richard was adopted in part to protect him from Rahl's legendary temper.
Kahlan, Richard, and Zedd try to track down the book, first visiting Zedd's old acquaintance Sharona "Shota" Otaga who gives Richard a Tarot reading that he would do well to take note of, one that includes both the Fool (also known as the Seeker) and the Ace of Swords.
Meanwhile Cara finds herself increasingly torn between her desire for the charismatic Rahl - and her own hunger for power - and doing the right thing in exposing Rahl's illegal and inhumane activities.
