    Summary

An old and battered Nightingale attends the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. There he reminisces about a conversation between himself, David, and a Son of Weyland in the 1930s, before Europe dissolved into a charnelhouse of blood and memories.

I'm fascinated by the idea that Thomas Nightingale, having lived through more than a century, was not only a mover and shaker (in his own small way) but also a witness to some of the great and horrifying events of world history. This piece stands alone, but I hope, eventually, to turn this into a series of anecdotes. It's my take on how he gets through the fall of the British Empire, two World Wars, and the death of everyone he's ever known and loved, but still gets to the Rivers of London series as the slightly battered but deeply moral and lovable person that we all adore.

    Summary

It was all very complicated, and we were clueless as to how to get this particular ghost to behave short of getting his old man in to tell him off. So we had gone to speak to him in the dewy early morning, moisture heavy in the warming spring air. I was not too sure about pulling out the big guns (Nightingale) so early but when things are getting weird on the Queen’s front lawn you kind of have to.

Trying to get a ghost? echo? of a River to behave opens up a can (envelope) of worms from Nightingale's past that everyone involved would rather not deal with, but sunshine always comes after storms.

Thomas Nightingale has been sent to meet with a river spirit, to get away from London, to stop mooning around after bloody Mellenby and to maybe pick up some exciting venereal diseases along the way.

Peter Grant is a contestant on The Great British Bake Off 2016, Thomas Nightingale is its famously stoic, poker-faced judge. The nation’s running commentary is their background soundtrack as they flirt onscreen. It’s gonna be a very long ten weeks.

    Summary

Following on from the events of Sixthlight's wonderful AU 'Changes of Perspective.'

Architect Peter Grant gets more than he bargained for when investigating a building site. Thomas Nightingale is having trouble with his central heating. These two matters are not linked- or are they?

(Or, 'in which Peter got his degree, Nightingale is retired- mostly- and David Mellenby is surprisingly active, all things considered.')

    Summary

Peter is the first apprentice for a very long time. There hasn’t been one for fifty years. The oath was last taken in nineteen sixty-one. Thomas Nightingale knew his duty. He was the last Wizard who could take on an apprentice and he wasn’t getting any younger. He needed to train another Wizard while he still had a decade of life left in his tired body. Someone tough, someone smart, someone who was willing to pick up Thomas’s responsibilities when he was finally released from his oaths.
So why isn’t there another Wizard in the Folly? He would be in his seventies by now - barring accidents, of course.

"What is a specter made of? Of signs, or more precisely of signatures, that is to say, those signs, ciphers, or monograms that are etched onto things by time. A specter always carries with it a date wherever it goes; it is, in other words, an intimately historical entity."
