Some nights were different, though. Dark nights that fell after darker days when they hadn’t saved anyone, or when their office smelled faintly of cigarette smoke. Nights when her wine tasted more like regret than relaxation, and her bath was too hot and too cold. Sometimes she needed something more. She needed him, although she would never say it.

In “Daemonicus,” the Satan-possessed doctor tells Doggett he’ll never be able to compete with Mulder. I think the bigger problem here is that Reyes is completely unequipped to compete with Scully. But at any rate, Doggett & Reyes, as a partnership, cannot even come CLOSE to competing with Mulder & Scully. "4-D" is not a bad plot. It's not badly written. But you just can’t watch something like “4-D” without thinking about how much better it would have been with Mulder and Scully in it.

    Summary

Something has been killing people in Beacon Hills and eating the victims flesh. The pack are investigating and trying to protect their town, however when Agents Mulder and Scully come to investigate the pack find themselves looking for a cannibalistic killer and having to handle nosey FBI agents.

    ***

Mulder shrugged. “I did a little digging into Beacon Hills history and according to witness reports I’ve got on other incidents it wouldn’t be the strangest thing to happen in that town.”
    “What do you mean?”
“Ritualistic murders, murders at the high school, hospital, and sheriffs’ department, a bombing at the sheriffs’ department, a woman found cut in half, people reporting masked figures carrying samurai swords, a giant lizard killing people,” Mulder listed off.
    “A giant lizard,” Scully repeated.
“Looks like we’re going to the weirdest town in America,” Mulder grinned.

So. I am about halfway into the horror that is Season Eight. I am assured that Season Nine gets worse.

I was thinking to myself, well, obviously giving these guys a pregnancy storyline was a really bad idea. And I’ve always hated the “Biogenesis” crap. But really, after the conspiracy is wiped out in “One Son,” what else was there to do? Could there have been ANY way to string this show along for another few years that wouldn’t have ended in the same misery?

And I thought: I know what I would have done.

I would have brought back Samantha.

Jesus, Vince. Pregnancy scares you guys, doesn’t it?

I mean, that’s what I assume from the fact that once Scully is pregnant the first thing that occurs to you to do with her is write a nice little episode in which she’s forcibly impregnated with a slug that’s supposed to be the Second Coming of Christ.

It's a lazy Sunday and the duo find themselves still at work. Scully lets her mind wander and it goes places she's not ready to deal with. Fortunately, Mulder has an idea that keeps her distracted.

Light and fluffy. Just the way I like them.

In other words, Batboy and Mulder really share some kind of cosmic affinity, and an episode about a half-human half-bat creature with Mulder in it, written by either Darin Morgan or Vince Gilligan, would have been awesome. And all along, I really wished I was watching that episode. Because an episode about a half-human half-bat creature who is taken deadly seriously by everyone involved, including the humor-challenged John Doggett and the in-no-mood-to-laugh Dana Scully (who surely misses Mulder 1000X more painfully than the viewers do)…well, that episode really kind of sucks.

    Summary

Comedy played an important role in establishing The X-Files as a zeitgeisty hit in its first few seasons. One of the signs of the show’s deterioration toward the end of its life is the devolution of the comic episode, as demonstrated by two of the worst episodes in the show’s first seven seasons: “Hollywood, A.D.” and “Fight Club,” written by David Duchovny and Chris Carter, respectively. About which the best thing I can say is that they have inspired me to go back and revisit an early and classic X-Files episode that got lost in the shuffle: Darin Morgan’s “Humbug.”
